Doubles Tournament 2025

Congratulations to Marl and Peter G. who won the Doubles competition in a tense playoff after drawing on games won, and hoops run, with Pam and Jane. Thanks go to Peter V. for organizing and running a very enjoyable day for everyone, and thanks to Janet F. and Ruth for the excellent cakes!

The Sheila Lines cup was played on Thursday July 17th. It was a handicap competition and 14 club members took part. We were divided into two teams and the red team played against the blue team. We all played six games lasting 30 minutes each. Due to double-banking, we had a ten minute catch up at the end of each game which gave everyone time to catch their breath and have a quick drink. Congratulations to John Atak who was the outright winner, not dropping a game. However, had we counted hoops rather than games, Pam would have won. The handicaps worked well, giving less able players some extra shots. The weather played its part and we had a dry day and not too hot. We all enjoyed lovely cake at the end of play as is the tradition. Many thanks to the bakers and all who played and helped. Mavis was my right-hand man, keeping the scores and playing a couple of games to give others a rest. Sue and Glynn were ‘ a team’: Sue playing in the morning, and Glynn in the afternoon .

All in all, a good day!

Julie.

Cusworth Walled Garden Open Day

We are grateful to Cusworth Hall and Park for our invitation to attend a Sunday open day. The walled garden dates back to the early days of the old Cusworth Manor House and has recently undergone extensive refurbishment.

A croquet lawn was set up for the day, and visitors were able to join the games in beautiful sunshine. We hope they enjoyed the experience.

Our Man in Mauritius

We are proud to announce that in 2025 we have a new foreign correspondent for the club. John Atack has taken part in the Sugar Beach International Croquet Cup 2025. This takes place in a spectacular sub-tropical location on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. John competed with elite players from around the world, and attended a master-class with Jenny Clarke, who is the holder of multiple world championship titles.

This is just the start of John's international croquet journey, and he will be competing in Corfu, and the Scottish Open Championships in Edinburgh.

We wish John well and hope he will share some of his new tips and techniques.

The 2025 Season Begins

Congratulations to Pam, John and Robert on their win at the first Yorkshire Federation match at Sheffield Parkhead, and also an impressive win at Sheffield U3A. The season has also started well with friendly games at Bishop Monkton and Southwell, with great weather conditions adding to the occasions.

The Sheila Lines singles cup competition was played on Tuesday August 27th. Sixteen club members took part. They were randomly selected into two teams and each player played six games. Handicaps were used. Congratulations to Pam Smith who won all of her games and was awarded the cup at the end of a very enjoyable day. The weather played its part and we were treated to lovely cakes provided by Sue, Janet and Pam and a refreshing cup of tea by Sheila and Tom before heading for home. Many thanks to all who helped with setting out the lawns and clearing up at the end.. Julie: Chairperson.

Inspired by Brodsworth Art Exhibition

We are proud to announce that club member Linda Bedford is displaying some of her oil paintings at Brodsworth Hall. One of these was inspired by L. S. Lowry. Linda's works form part of the Inspired By Brodsworth Exhibition which is now showing on the upper floor of the hall.

Congratulations to Double Cup-Winner

It was a great start to the 2024 season for John Atack. At the AGM in February he was awarded cups for Best Improved Player of 2023 and Winner of the 2023 Ladder Competition.
